Chicom Quints?

From the AP comes this amazing photo of a chinese woman, Qiao Yubo, who is pregnant with at least five babies, as she walks with her husband in China's northeast Jilin province. Qiao, who is 1.67-meters tall, has a waistline measurement of 1.75 meters, five months into her pregnancy.

This certainly throws a monkey wrench into China's one child rule. I wonder how the government will handle this?

  5. Cube,
Thanks for stopping by my blog today. It's been crazy over there. But comment moderation has solved the issue. I have a contingency plan as well, but haven't finalized it.

Judging from her bulge, this pregnant woman looks further along than five months. What is she carrying? Baby elephants?

  9. Who knows what the Chicoms will do with the extra babies, especially the female ones. I'm not optimistic about their fate though.

  11. What do you mean "at least" five babies?!!!!! When will they finish counting and provide a final tally?

  12. I wonder what kind of prenatal care is available to her. Even with twins the risks go way up, let alone "at least five."

My guess is that she will be delivering sooner rather than later, and the babies won't do well unless they've got a 3rd level nursery somewhere nearby. She may not end up with any to take home :-(

After having our 24 weeker in a hospital with an excellent NICU, and knowing how slim her chances were, I'm not getting my hopes up for this woman. I'll keep her in my prayers.

  13. "At least five babies" reminds me of this story on Animal Planet about this dog that they thought was having 5 puppies but it turned out to be 7.
    Whoops!
I don't think humans were meant to have their babies in litters.
Did she have fertility treatments or was this a miracle of nature?
AND, if some of these babies are conjoined, will she travel to L.A. and get Medical to pay to separate them a la this story?

  14. They live in rural China...the one baby rule does not apply there. They appear to be farmers. The gov may actually encourage them to have more kids for the dwindeling number of working farmers.

Not to mention that if they do have more girls, they will be the most popular family when suiters to come calling.

  15. eyes: oh yeah, O'Reilly needs to watch out for The BLOG... ;-)

caz: I guess sonograms aren't as common in China as they are here.

jen: I agree. I don't know what the NICU situation is like there. BTW which one was your preemie?

jessey: Yeah, humans just aren't built for litters.

nicole: thanks for the info. Perhaps there is hope for those babies after all.

  16. That looks fake to me. I think he's a teenaged boy with a body pillow shoved underneath that dress.

  17. Anya was my preemie. She weighed one pound, eight ounces at birth. She's pretty ok now, sort of freaky and twisted but so are the full term kids so I think that's a parenting issue...

  18. j.d.: they don't make pillows that big.

jen: freaky & twisted. yeah, I can relate ;-)

  19. jen - our evan was two pounds, nine ounces and born at just shy of 26 weeks, but i had many problems beforehand which told her to grow as fast as she could. i had excellent insurance - it paid for the $260,000+ bill - thank God!

  20. As we all should know by now, this was a fake. She had everything from quilts to hats under there. Seems she's lost two pregnancies before this fake one. Maybe that did something to her. BTW, I had a preemie two days short of 24 weeks, 1 1/2 lbs and 11 1/2 inches long. A long road even with an excellent NICU. She's 12 now and perfect.

  21. anonymous: Despite it looking like she was carrying the kitchen sink under her moo moo, I didn't know this was fake. I think we'd all appreciate a link to the real story. Thanks.
