The Peach Butt

Dmarks from The Throwaway Blog did a post about 15 Roadside Destinations and asked which, if any, had been left off the list.

Here's one that I like from Gaffney, South Carolina...

Ugly Dog?

Pabst, A Boxer-mix Wins
Blue Ribbon In Ugly Dog Contest

OK, Pabst does have a prominent under-bite, but I think that hardly qualifies him to earn the title of Ugliest Dog.

Pabst does have a striking appearance, but ugly? Not a chance.

THIS is an ugly dog.

I think Pabst won the wrong contest.

Billy Mays 1958- 2009

First David Carradine, then Ed McMahon, then Farrah Fawcett, then Michael Jackson, and now Billy Mays...

TV Pitchman Billy Mays Found Dead At Tampa Home

There is some speculation that Mays' untimely death at 50 could've been exacerbated by a rough landing on Saturday afternoon at Tampa International Airport when the plane blew out its front tires. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, hug your kids if you have them, and live your life because whether you are rich, poor, a celebrity, or an unknown, there are no guarantees in life for a tomorrow.

The Real Deal

NASA Poster Depicts New ISS Crew In Star Trek Uniforms

This is the closest thing to Star Fleet on Earth.

The real Star Trekkers.

I think they look quite spiffy in their TNG uniforms, although I think TOS uniforms would've been more timely given the new movie.

But it's all good to me.

You Can't Believe Your Eyes

And now for some Michael Jackson-free news...

From the Bad Astronomy blog comes this cool optical illusion where the blue spirals and the green spirals are the same color!

YES!

If you don't believe me, read the explanation...

The Blue And The Green

Unbelievablely cool effect.

Pelosi Pushes

House Democrats Win Key Test Vote On Climate Bill

The Red Queen is out to crush us in her osteoarthritic grip and the brunt of the news is focusing on Michael Jackson's career.

I can only hope the legislature wakes up and HR 2454, a.k.a., the Cap & Trade bill gets crushed instead.

"I Lied," Kimberley Vlaeminck 56 Tattoos Admittal

I knew this story was fishy when I first read about it. Nobody falls asleep getting that many tattoos.

Turns out she wanted the 56 star tattoos plastered over her face.

Go figure.

Bad Golf, Good Golf

Media Cheer Obama's Golf Outings; Criticized Republicans' Trips To Course

Liberal media bias doesn't exist.

It is just a figment in the mind of those in the vast right wing conspiracy.

Yeah, it's good to be a democrat...

*sarcasm off*

Buckywires

Buckyballs Polymerized To Form Buckywires

The trick to connecting two buckyballs together is by using a molecule of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene in between. Repeat the process and you get a line of buckyballs lined up like a strand of pearls called a buckywire.

Buckywires ought to be handy for all kinds of biological, electrical, optical, and magnetic applications. The gist of the paper is that anything that traditional carbon nanotubes can do, buckywires can do better. Or at least more cheaply.

Finally, a use for buckyballs... and it only took 25 years. Real science moves at a snail's pace.

Killer Lightning

I had lightning on the brain thanks to an amazing photo of a strike on crazy4coen's post on her blog, Raising Sunny

... and then I ran across this in my local paper today:

Lightning Bolt Kills 15 Huddled Cattle In Lithia, Florida

It is a belittlingly apt reminder of the awesome power of nature.

Gibbs On Bush Criticism: 'We Won'

Now I know why BO's Press Secretary Robert Gibbs gives such juvenile responses to valid questions and criticism...

I don't know why I didn't see it before, but he's really the pudgy and immature for his age Gibby Carlson character from the TV show iCarly!

Let's hope Gibby asserts some self control and doesn't dance shirtless for an encore.

Really cool discussion about how ants are able to survive being microwaved.

Cloneworthy Dog

James Symington of Los Angeles holds five clones of Trakr, his late search-and-rescue dog, who found the last human survivor in the rubble of the 9/11 attacks.

Symington received the clones for free after Trakr was judged the most 'cloneworthy' dog in the world.

Wouldn't you love to have one of those beautiful pups?

Ruling On NightJack Author Richard Horton Kills Blogger Anonymity

According to the High Court of the UK, thousands of bloggers who operate behind the cloak of anonymity have no right to keep their identities secret.

Hmmmm. I wonder how long before this kind of ruling comes across the pond to the States?

I might as well come clean before they out me ... I'm really a circle ;-)

Durbin Cashed Out During Big Stock Collapse: Asset Sales Came After Meeting With Fed, Treasury Chiefs

Joe Shoemaker, spokesman for democrat Illinois senator Dick Durbin said Durbin didn't capitalize on anything Paulson and Bernanke told congressional leaders at the Sept. 18, 2008 meeting.

Oh, I totally believe nothing untoward happened...

The Pool Is Open

OK, the globe may be warming, but for the second year in a row, June marked the second time our pool hit the 80 degree mark. That's rather late in the season for Florida.

Anyway, my family has been swimming in our unheated pool for weeks now, but I'm a tropical flower and cold water isn't for me. So I've held out until now...

This weekend I will swim.

DNA Nanotech

Gene Expression: Origami at the Molecular Level

In essense, it is molecular origami...

This type of research is just the beginning of learning how to reprogram the proteins that go wrong and cause diseases such as Alzheimer's and cancer.

And last month, a team at the Danish National Research Foundation built a DNA cube with a lid that can be opened, closed and then locked with a DNA key.

How cool is that?

Cheating ChiComs

China Airs Fears On US Debt, Dollar: Lawmaker

Oh, really.

This coming from a country with a record of cheating, lying, greed, corruption, abuse of personal freedom, and dishonor at almost every conceivable level of government.

I haven't forgotten about the Beijing Olympics or their clamp downs during the recent Tiananmen Square anniversary, but more recently my attention is drawn to the corruption surrounding the shoddy building codes of schools, hospitals, and factories, which collapsed like a house of cards during the Sichuan earthquake of May 2008.

After the Tangshan earthquake in 1976, which killed over 240,000 people, the ChiCom government went through the motions about requiring new building codes that would withstand major quakes.

No one calls them out on the fact that these new building codes aren't being followed otherwise you wouldn't have lost 69,122 people in the Sichuan earthquake of May 2008. In fact, the ChiCom government just recently came out with its official tally of students who died in the quake -- 5,335. It's an inconceivable number of children.

A reality check is sorely needed when the socialist/communists of the world have the gall to infer that greed and corruption are bastions of the capitalist countries.

The US needs to get its economic house in order because a world in which these godless thugs are in control is a world that all beings on this planet should fear.

David Carradine 1936-2009

I read at Z's blog that David Carradine had passed away.

"Kung Fu" and 'Kill Bill' Star David Carradine Found Dead In Thai Capital, Suicide Suspected

Further research has revealed that there is speculation that his death was accidental and not a suicide.

In any event, I am sad that he is no longer with us.

No More Magic

From the Big Hollywood blog comes this insightful piece by Michael S. Rulle Jr.:

The 'Magic Latina'

The final paragraphs are key:

"Sitting back and being afraid to be called racist is not what is needed from the Republicans. They should disband rather than follow that route. Sotomayor should be compelled to explain her past statements for the public to hear.

We don’t need Magic Negroes, Magic Latinas, or Magic Caucasians in politics or our judiciary."

Darn right, Mr. Rulle, except I have yet to run across a Magic Caucasian that wasn't an entertainer that performs feats of prestidigitation, but has no 'magical powers' like those mentioned in the article.

We don't need any more activist judges on the SCOTUS.

Cat Killings

Cats in South Florida are on high alert...

Sadistic Cat Killer Strikes Again

I first heard about these horrid cat mutilation/killings in late May and now the body count is up to 26.

What a sick, twisted psycho. I hope he gets caught before he graduates to torturing people.

*sigh*

What a world.

The Keeper

"The sea was angry that day, my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli." -- George Costanza

The breeze felt wonderful, but because of the chop, we weren't able to go out as far as we had planned. We did catch a bunch of fish - sea trout, grouper, whiting - unfortunately, they were too small to keep except for the sea trout (above) caught by my youngest cubelet.

We moved around quite a bit and ended up in an area that's called 'the shark breeding ground' and there were many sharks attracted to the chum and cat food we threw overboard. Youngest cubelet came close to catching a small one, but it got away with exactly half of her bait fish.

Mostly what we did was feed live pinfish and greenback fish to the bigger critters in the sea, whatever they were.

One wiley seagull grabbed the bait fish during one of my casts and proceeded to fly away with it. I tugged. The seagull pulled. Eventually, I beat the seagull, but the biggest loser was the poor bait fish that was biten neatly in half during the following cast.

All in all, it was a tremendous amount of fun. At times, exhilirating -- when my brother, the captain, was racing the boat at warp speed over a very choppy sea -- and, at times, quiet and peaceful when we were at one with the mighty ocean.

The best part of the day for me was that both of my girls caught their first fish and then some. I've finally succeeded in making the next generation of fishing fans in the house.

They can't wait to go fishing again.

:-)
