Knife-Swallowing Puppy

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

From Plantation, Florida, comes a story of a 6-month-old puppy who swallowed a 13-inch serrated knife.

Elsie, a Saint Bernard puppy, apparently had the blade between her esophagus and stomach for about four days before it was removed earlier this week in a 2-hour operation.

Jan Scarola, owner of Elsie and (the one holding the expensive vet bill), says she thinks one of her six other dogs -- four Saint Bernards, a German shepherd and a Labrador -- somehow got the knife, which eventually made its way to Elsie.

I can just see these dogs conversing in dog about this, "Let's give it to Elsie. She'll eat anything."

The puppy has an 8" scar, but is otherwise doing well.

Truth can be stranger than fiction.

  2. Yikes! And OUCH! and my word HOW did that puppy get around town like that?
I get a hangnail and the world ceases to be until I can remedy the situation, I think a giant knife down my gullet would have a similar effect on my day-to-day activities.
    Yikes!

  3. It certainly helps to be a St. Bernard. Even as puppies, those dogs are huge.

  4. I saw this pup on the local news last night...it was a very large pup...I was picturing a much smaller pup with that very large knife...either way...big knife.

  5. The dog swallowed the knife handle-first, but it's still amazing that it didn't cause any damage. 13" is an awful lot of cutting surface.

  6. I'd say luck of the Irish, but isn't a St. Bernard a French dog?
    Damn Frenchies!

  8. Swiss Army knives are so small, this dog could've swallowed a case of them. If the puppy could swallow a cuckoo clock, now that would be interesting.
