Bugs. It's What's For Dinner.
I can't make up crazy stuff like this...
U.N. Conference Promotes Insect-Eating For Everyone From Famine Victims to Astronauts
"Prof. Arnold van Huis, a tropical entomologist known as "Mr. Edible Insect" in his native Netherlands, blamed a Western bias against eating insects for the failure of aid agencies to incorporate bugs into their mix.
"They are completely biased," van Huis said. "They really have to change. I would urge other donor organizations to take a different attitude toward this ... It's excellent food. It can be sustainable with precautions."
I don't care how nutritious bugs are, I won't knowingly engage in entomophagy.
Would you?
my husband, THE consummate outdoorsman, will eat bugs - and he tells me (for many years) "you, too, will one day eat bugs." to which i respond, "i'll eat tree bark first!" and he'll ask, "what kind of indian are you?" and i reply, "not that kind of indian..."
ReplyDeletei have eaten snails and they're not so bad...except for the rubbery track part - too chewy!
p.s. - if you're going to eat snails, my husband says the best way to get them ready for the eatin' stage is to put them in a container with corn meal that they cannot escape from for a week or two before preparing - as they eat the cornmeal, it gets rid of any impurities in their systems.
ReplyDeletemy handy kitchen hint of the day.
I watch "Survivorman" on TV and I cringe everytime he eats bugs. I guess I'm too much of a city girl.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, as a child in NYC, a fly did fly into my mouth. My teacher had just moments before warned me to close my mouth or a fly would fly into it. I had lost my front teeth & couldn't stop feeling the gap... until the fly flew in!
This idea makes total sense to me.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I personally wouldn't eat an insect, but, you know, great for other people. :-)
OMG NO!
ReplyDeleteNot unless I had to and then I would know them to be a good source of protien or so my father used to tell me :-D
*protein*
ReplyDeleteI have leg bias. If something has fewer than 4 limbs, or more than 4 limbs, it skeeves me.
ReplyDeletebugs are dirty and gross. No thank you.

jan: heh heh.
ReplyDeletemiladysa: I guess if my only choice were starvation... but me, I'd be frantically looking for berries before I succumbed ;-)
bw: lol. Leg bias. That's choice.
Bugs YUCKY!
ReplyDeleteI can't stand to look at them, let alone eat them.
But I have heard that some Africans eat locust and that its a delicacy for them. I guess "One Man's meat is another man's poison!"
bubbles: I think about large arachnids whenever I eat lobsters ;-)
