Creepy Vintage Ads

Via GeekPress comes this...

15 Creepiest Vintage Ads Of All Time

I had trouble picking just one creepy picture from the list. Some are wicked funny, some are wicked stupid, and some are just wicked.

Make sure you click on #6 and read about the use for Lysol that I just couldn't believe was for real, but it is.

Gives me a whole new respect for modern marketing mavens.

  3. That girl looks more like she's thinking of eating mommy's hand than the sandwich.

Oh... Lysol! Oh no, no, no. Yikes!

These are all awful. I remember that there was a chubby section in the stores when I was little. They don't still do that do they?

  7. Kind of an exorcist kid in the pic.

Of course, the kids in #8 push the creepiness meter too.

As far as #6, I have no words. Let me just say, my professional opinion is that this is not a good idea.

  8. That girl looks like the sister of the kid in The Omen. Remember him? CREEPY. All I can say to the Lysol one is ewwwwww...then OUCH.

  9. Those were some twisted ads... and yet I feel the desire to own those products immediately. I will not feel fresh until I do.

  10. Lysol? OMG! Mucous matter? Double OMG! I never have liked the smell of Lysol. Ladies - remember to douche or he won't like you anymore. Triple OMG!

  13. Well!

Not all the surrealism has thrived during the Age of BHO.

Good post, with an unusual twist on retro, often portrayed in a much-beloved manner.

BTW, I do recall the picture in this posting. I thought that picture strange at the time too!

  14. Lee: Yeah, I get a zombie vibe from the kid as well.

Ananda Girl: When I read the Lysol ad I was incredulous. That was offensive on so many levels, not to mention unhealthy.

Nowadays they still have chubby clothes but they just label them Almost-But-Not-Quite-Anorexic Wear. It sells better.

    CrazyBunnyLay: Glad you liked it.

  15. Laura B.: That's a scary thought.

Birdwoman: Eyepatch dude was one of several of those ads that I actually do remember. I always wondered what happened to his eye.

Chuck: Yeah, the decidedly creepy look on that kid is disconcerting. I don't know how they didn't spot it in the development stage.

The kids in #8 would not inspire me to eat chocolate or anything else they were selling.

    Yeah, #6 was unbelievable.

  16. Brenda Jean: Yeah, little Damiena Thorn.

Ouch is right. I'll never look at Lysol the same way again.

    DaBlade: lol.

Crazy4coens: Spot on. OMG on many levels.

Z: She does resemble the Bad Seed, doesn't she?

Beckeye: Go ahead and laugh, but I must say that it wasn't easy keeping the meteorites from crashing into my own children's tub at bathtime.

AlwaysOnWatch: Yeah, those of us who remember do remember that retro wasn't always better.

  17. Just what exactly was so creepy about the Daisy Christmas ad?

Christmas is as great a time to give kids their first air rifle, or shotgun, or any other firearm, Santa, or their parents feel they deserve.

    Especially when they've been good.

Those who object are certainly unfettered by me when they supply their children with chairman Mao products or glory hole supplies!

Sommeone has to grow up and act like adults in this country! We can't all grow up to be Gov't subsidized loafers dreaming of violating farm animals!

  19. QQ: I remember those Daisy BB gun ads and have nothing against them... they're all fun & games until someone puts their eye out!

Brooke: Some of these ads are definitely yikes-inducing ;-)

  21. Jess: I agree wholeheartedly. Ewwww is the word that comes to my mind. OK, its not really a word, but you catch my drift.
