Big Wind Passes

When I took this photo in 2008, it turns out the record had already been broken by a
253 mph gust recorded in 1996 on Barrow Island in Australia during Cyclone Olivia.

231-mph NH Wind Gust Is No Longer World's Fastest

Officials at the Mount Washington Observatory said "Mount Washington still holds the record for the Northern and Western hemispheres, and said it still can claim to be home to some of the world's worst weather given the combination of bitter cold, snow, wind and freezing fog it frequently experiences."

6288 feet of harrowing climb for a broken record? I feel cheated.

  1. And where is the plaque for the Highest Wind Observed by Woman?

  2. Um, I'll take their word on it!

  3. BeckEye: That wasn't lost on me either. I think it should read "observed by an anemometer" because it was that instrument that actually recorded the velocity of the wind.

BTW if the women were smart, they were drinking hot toddies at the hotel and not foolishly going up the mountain in a storm. I'm just saying...

  4. No, no, the biggest wind will take place tonight when Obama steps to the podium and opens his mouth. Oh please let Joe Wilson be there and shout "YOU LIE".

Speaking of hot toddies, I'll need a margarita or two to get through Obama's speech tonight.

  5. Brooke: Yeah. Me too. Mr. Cube got me up there once, but I'm not going back up there evah!

Debbie: lol. The Mightiest Wind Of All.

You are braver than I am. I'll just read about it tomorrow. The sound of BO's voice makes me want to projectile vomit and that would be a waste of a good margarita or three ;-)

  6. 231 mph still pretty gusty! That's an F4 on the fujita tornado scale. It would definately leave you with a bad hair day. I agree with Debbie. Set up an anemometer in the oval office.

  7. We're going to have a drinking game tonight. Every time he says "I" we take a sip. That should get us through the speech mostly bombed.

  8. DaBlade: I wouldn't want to be the one paying for the one that's going to be sitting in at the SOTU speech. There's going to be some serious 'splaining to be done and there will be, as Debbie said, the biggest wind passing.

Debbie: I'm still giggling over that one.

  9. Jan: Seriously, you won't make it five minutes. Make sure you have some extra lamp shades handy if you are going to have guests ;-)

  10. Jan: BTW we'll be right over ;-)

  11. I'm with you cube, only men would be "smart" enough to be out measuring something like this.

    Debbie made me laugh.

  12. OH ,DARN....Debbie beat me to it!

Yup, the biggest wind is TONIGHT, that is FOR SURE. Man, the liquor's going to flow ....!!
I wish I'd be home to see it, but maybe they'll show it later on when I get home and I can catch up with you guys :-) hic!

  13. The first thing I thought of was my husband and son congratulating each other on their "big wind" after I fix homemade chili.

I'd rather be on that mountain top...

  14. Everyone already beat me to my best punchlines i.e. the State of the Union address, the husband and son claiming the best wind, etc. So, I'll just applaud your climb regardless of the broken record.
