Always On Watch: We raised our girls to be tiger girls. If they had a rough day at school, I'd comfort them and then I'd tell them they could handle it because they were my tiger girls. Once they growled for me, they felt much better. That might not work for all people, but it worked for us. We have two beautiful (inside and out), well-educated, and thoughtful young women who don't suffer fools lightly. I'm a very proud mom.
Sue Hanes: Read what I said to Always On Watch. That's how we raised our girls. Life isn't always easy and we didn't want our girls going out into the world being defenseless. That's true feminism.
Cube, I see too many of today's parent rearing their children as sensitive little snowflakes. Indeed, there is a presence of this in today's homeschoolers! Very disheartening from my perspective.
Always On Watch: You are an educator and have more experience with that than I do. I saw it when my girls were growing up and my husband and I were in agreement about raising them without the "victim" mentality.
Our girls, 21 and 25, can be a little crabby around the house, but they get props for being well-behaved in other circumstances. Friends of ours who have no children, but live vicariously through ours, took all of us out to dinner at a very posh restaurant, and our girls made us proud. Their conversation was erudite and their manner was friendly. Our hosts were very pleased. Then we went to the Monty Python show and they were even more pleased about our daughters finally getting the jokes that we didn't let them know when they little.
I don't think raising "victims" is good for America. It needs to stop.
