The Raccoon Saga
A while back I saw what I thought to be was our Main Coon cat, Shoshin,on the back deck, but when a baby raccoon followed her, I knew immediately that it wasn't our cat. I watched the duo go from the deck and go around the pool enclosure. I put out some saltines for them and they were gone the next day. I don't know who ate them, but I have a few suspects.
END STORY... not.
Yesterday, I saw two baby raccoons run across the back deck and I was amazed. Then a third one came running and then a fourth! I was speechless at this point and then a firth one came running up the deck and running up our huge oak tree. I watched them for hours until my husband came home and put a bowl of cat food up in the crook of the tree where they were hiding. For the rest of the evening, we watched those beautiful babies happily chowing down while mama coon watched from a higher post in our tree.
END STORY...????
My husband put out some sushi in the back yard and I put out some crackers on the back deck.
I'll let you know when I know something.
You have a racoon family living with you. How precious is that.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ♥
Of all wildlife raccoons are my favorite, I think you have permanent guests.
ReplyDeleteSandee: With them, I CAN co-exist.
ReplyDeleteJan: I like raccoons too, possums are a second favorite. Nocturnal creatures don't come out in daylight unless there are dire circumstances. We're just doing what we can to help.
ReplyDeleteI put out some cheap Sams Club dog food for the raccoons every evening. The babies are awfully cute.
ReplyDeleteWhen our deck living stray cat is out (in etter weather) they all get along just fine.
They are obviously not indoor pets though.
Raccoons are wonderful, and very, very strong. Now i'm going to wonder if there's a way to trap, neuter/spay, rabies vaccinate, and then release raccoons, just to be on the safe side.
ReplyDeleteKid: That is a nice thing to do. I think we're going to follow your lead. The babies are adorable and watching them eat was a special treat for us.
ReplyDeleteMessymimi: I can't tell you how happy it made me, my husband, and my eldest daughter, to see these little critters chomping away at the cat food my husband put up in the tree for them. I really don't anything about trapping and neutering raccoons. I've only heard about that happening with cats in my area.
ReplyDeleteXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX: Whoever you are, I'm glad you liked the "good" article. Now, go away, and don't bother my blog again. I will get very nasty if you come back again. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteCube, PS - Just know they are dangerous. i.e. If you tried to hand feed one, you'd probably be bitten before long. I put the dog food under the diving board which is on the other side of the pool from the house in case it rains or snows. They'll find food wherever you put it. No need to climb a tree :-)
ReplyDeleteKid: Thanks for that, but believe me, I know all wild animals can be dangerous. We put the cat food up the tree because that's where they were hanging out. We didn't want our cats coming around and scaring them away. We very much enjoyed watching them eat. Loved how the mom let her babies eat first. So sweet.
ReplyDeleteNo offense :) I've seen people try to hand feed them on youtube.
ReplyDeleteKid: I've held a few large birds of prey, many snakes, a sloth, a chimp, an alligator, a crocodile, several sharks and goodness knows how many other little critters, but mostly it was always under controlled conditions and with animals that I knew were with trainers and somewhat used to people. BTW the baby sloth didn't want to let go. Not in a mean way, it just wanted to keep hugging me. The feeling was mutual.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun.
ReplyDeleteKid: We're easily amused ;)
