I think that a Putin visit to DC would be a good next move in terms of international diplomacy. While many inside the Beltway are pushing for a war with Russia (simply because it's there), the diplomacy gains of a US that can work through difficulties even with strident rivals makes sense. Russia is a pivot point in many ways to put pressure on China. The Russians don't like or trust the Chinese. Never have - never will. By creating accords with the USA that make sense, it helps blunt Chinese ambitions (even if only temporarily).
