What Are We To Make Of The Case Of Scholar Avital Ronell?
The same exact thing we should make out of the case of any professor who abuses a graduate student. Being a scholarly "queer" feminist professor doesn't give you a license to harass.

What I found much more interesting than the above story is found in the comments and it involves the backstory surrounding the name Nimrod, which just happens to be the name of the unfortunate graduate student. Did you know that the name Nimrod means "Great Hunter" and when Buggs Bunny called Elmer Fudd "Nimrod", it was because he was being sarcastic and not because it was an insult in and of itself.
Good old Buggs. He continues to entertain me after all these years.
Well, you hear about the guys all the time so I guess she thought she'd give it a go too. How frightening. The school did the right thing.

If he’s your student, your emails shouldn’t read like love letters. No harrassment, by anyone, of anyone, in any direction. Why is that so hard to understand?

ReplyDeleteAccording to progs in New York, there are 31 genders. California recognizes only 12. Some people say there are two (male and female). If you're wired into the whole 31 gender thing, you'll know that you can change your gender as often as you'd like. So you can start out as a male, have lunch as a male lesbian and end the day as a female hermaphrodite - or something like that. Fluidic gender makes for interesting bedfellows. Sort of like a Rubic's Cube (no pun) of options. And at any point of the day you can legitimately choose to be offended as your gender shifts. Progs say that race is the same thing - it's what you feel like at the moment, which interestingly, makes the whole racial and cultural appropriation thing meaningless. I can start the day as an Eskimo woman, have lunch as a Peruvian man and end it as an Iranian "animal fancier".

I didn't get that she's a lesbian...? Why would this guy say he hit on her if she was, Ed? Maybe I didn't read as carefully as I should.........but that'd be a great defense from her side! ;-)
I personally don't think a person's academic stature should matter if a man OR woman is hitting on people. I also don't think lawsuits are always the way to go. GROW UP, kick the person where it hurts, and get on with your life.

ReplyDeleteKid: I studied biology @ the University of South Florida. I took a boatload of science classes and I can give you many anecdotes re: many professors who were exceptionally wise and whose counsel was never liberal or conservative. Thermodynamics just is.

He also informed us that he was Canadian and then he proceeded to tell us a joke... "On a hot, humid, sunny day, how do you get 100 Canadians out of a pool at noon?"

ReplyDeleteZ: This whole thing is hair-brained which is typical of everything the left touches. The professor self-describes herself as "queer" not lesbian so I take it that the rest of us are left out of the loop of what that means exactly, but I would hide the cats and maybe even the goldfish if she were to visit.
