Tut's Gem

From the BBC comes this fascinating story about a mysterious yellow-green gem on one of Tutankhamun's necklaces.

The gem's origin was traced to unexplained chunks of glass found scattered in the sand in a remote region of the Sahara Desert. The glass was created by a very hot event...

A fireball from a meteor?

Or something else...

  6. I've always been amazed by the ancient Egyptians. I've even heard those who think that aliens had something to do with why they were so intelligent and able to build such massive structures. So, maybe that yellow gem is really an alien substance. Ooooooooh.

  7. j.d.: I don't think the Egyptians had alien help. I think they just worked tons of slaves to death to create their wonderful structures.

The gem is just glass. What is strange about it is that it was created during a very hot event, yet there is no evidence of a crater nearby. So it's origins are a mystery.
