Mt Washington

One of the things we did during our recent vacation was drove up Mt. Washington... all 6,288 feet of it.

Mr. Cube drove. I cringed. Personally, I like guard rails...

See for yourself how scary it is... Mount Washington Auto Road

And yes, at the summit we got a bunch of bumperstickers, t-shirts, magnets, pens, shot glasses, and a mug.

My personal favorite is a pin that reads, "I survived Mt Washington Auto Road"

I'm glad I did it once.

  1. i hate these kind of road trips - my husband took us through lassen volcanic park once and it was all i could do to maintain ANY sense of sanity. no, i've not been the same since...

  2. Whoa, I would've loved to see that!

I love the mountains, and the oceans. Well, pretty much anything but the dessert.

  3. Don't think I would be able to take one of those drives.

  5. I've always wanted to see Mt Washington ever since reading "Intervention" by Julian May (a book in one of the two best science fiction series of all time).

I have you in my Blogroll now.

  7. nanc: Are you sure we weren't twins separated at birth? Honestly, we have soooo much in common I sometimes wonder.

brooke: Next time, you can take my place. The sheer mountain drops were not my favorite places to be... at least you can't fall off the desert!

shover: We are in agreement. It was one scary ride.

woman: Oh no, I'm not daring at all. Mr. Cube & the cubelets dragged me onto that mountain kicking & screaming.

  8. That is a sweet road, kind of reminds me of the twisty, switchback-full Road to Hana on Maui. Yikes!

  9. Hey, I've been there. I don't like it either.

  10. I hate guardrailless roads so much I can't look at your link!
I did the Continential Divide drive once, looking down over no guardrails, seeing very tiny toothpicks which were, in truth, the tops of extremely tall trees waaaaaaaay "down there".

No thanks! But glad you had fun!!!

  11. beckeye: I'd take the worst Pittsburgh can dish out over riding to the summit of that mountain again. Yikes!

dmarks: Is that the same Julian May of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy?
I've not read 'Intervention'... should I?

  12. david: It didn't feel sweet to me.

jungle mom: Do you remember "Oh My God" turn? I could've sworn there was more than one of those.

Z: Not fun. It was sheer terror.

  13. Cube: "Intervention" is in the same series. As as hardcover, it is one book "Intervention". As paperbacks, it is two books: "Surveillance" and "Metaconcert".

It is part of the same series. I think the first written books, "Saga of Pliocene Exile", are really one of the two best science fiction series of all time. After she wrote those, she wrote the "Intervention" book/books, which are chronologically the earliest in the series, starting with the very first operant Remillards sometime in the mid 20th century.

The "Galactic Milieu Trilogy" was written after this, and chronologically takes place not longer after "Intervention" ended.

I thought "Intervention" was better than "Galactice Milieu".

  14. dmarks: Thanks. I will put May's early books on my 'To Read' list.

BTW what do you consider the other
    best science fiction series?

  15. Looking at that website, I can see why you were wishing you had guard rails. Beautiful, but a bit nerve racking. I wouldn't recommend that drive to a lush.

  17. My folks went there and they have a bumper sticker that says "this car climbed Mt. Washington!"

    Cool!

  18. j.d.: Yeah, you wouldn't want to have too much caffeine either. Wouldn't want to get jittery during that drive.

nanc: Why I oughtta pound you...
    ;-)

edge: You get one of those bumperstickers in the packet you check in at the bottom. Unfortunately, we were driving a rental car, so we had to buy different stickers which read, "I survived Mt. Washinton Auto Road."
