Gold Medley

The iconic image of Mark Spitz, 7 gold medal winner from 1972...

Image of Michael Phelps, 8 gold medal winner from 2008...

What's with the tacky looking red ribbons? I think Phelps got gypped in the iconic photo department.

  1. I don't know. Spitz kinda looks like a porn star in his pic.

  2. bw: I admit he looks a little seedy in retrospective, but he didn't look that way in the 70's.

nanc: How cool is that!!! I'd adopt Yoda in a minute.

  3. Michael looks like he's wearing a girls' halter made from polyester. ew.

  4. LOL! The seedy look was my first thought, too.

Poor Phelps. As a very pasty-white person, I hoped they'd have photoshopped him a tan. ;)

    Still, very cool nod!

  5. I think Phelps just got gypped in the looks department, personally, but....

I'd heard he was arrogant but heard an interview with Lauer and he didn't seem too bad.

I wish HE'D said anything CLOSE to Kobe Bryant's rave for America..THAT was FANTASTIC!! Or if Phelps had even just sang our anthem .... that would have been nice.

  6. jan: There you go... a polyester halter from the Dollar store. Very tacky.

brooke: I don't know that much about him, but he looks goofy to me.

Z: It would be nice to hear all of our winning athletes sing the national anthem, or at the very least, just move your lips to the words.

I didn't hear Kobe's pro-America rant... I guess he's happy to live in a country that is so forgiving to people who trangress.

  9. p.f. please don't get me started on ascot jokes...

cube - you doing ok with fay? tmw's power/phone down and they're probably suffering severely right now - the warning was such that they didn't get their shutters up.

  10. nanc: We're doing just fine. We get more rain during a daily thunderstorm than we've gotten with the totality of TS Fay. We're not out of the woods yet, because "Which Way Fay" might just make a leap to the west again.

Sorry to hear about tmw. Hope they're OK.

  11. Cube-We didn't put the shutters up for Wilma...so?
We lost power for about 14 hrs., landline is down till Friday, but we still have dsl...go figure!
Our barrier island has received at least 13 inches of rain...it's a little puddly around here! And vehicles that don't slow down have really cool rooster tails following them down the street!
Spitz does look a little 70'sish, Phelps is pale...

    tmw(the soggy and wind blown)

  12. I don't care about those red neck ribbons; it's those fabulous gold medals that count!!
    WAY TO GO!!!!!!
I watched most of his Olympic medal swims, and it was so exciting. His record won't be broken for a very long time, if ever. That's quite a feat!
He's planning on competing in London for the next Olympics. He'll most likely rack up even more medals.
My guess is Phelps is not hurting for cash.

  14. j.d.: Your guess is a correct one. Phelps has enough money in endorsements to live a very comfortable life.

Last Christmas he put a key in his mother's stocking... to a new Mercedes. Me, I get stuff like
M&Ms - not that there's anything wrong with that ;-)

Anyway, he's planning to open a swim school in Baltimore so he can teach & train. I'm sure it will do well. Good for him.
