Whatever Happened To Madonna?

Camille Paglia gives a review of Madonna's new CD, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" in an article from Salon.com entitled Dancing As Fast As She Can and the dish is not a pretty sight.

Here is a tidbit from the article in Paglia's characteristic rapid-fire style:

"Even allowing for the fact that she must strenuously maintain her hipness for a busy husband 10 years her junior, Madonna is starting to morph into the mature Joan Crawford of "Torch Song," still ferociously dancing but with her fascist willpower signaled by brute, staring eyes and fixed jawline. In cannibalizing her disco diva days, Madonna runs the risk of turning into a pasty powdered crumpet like the aging Bette Davis in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" Will she become a whooping Charo shaking her geriatric hoochie-coochie hips on TV talk shows? Or should we expect a sudden, grisly collapse from glowing beauty to dust, like Ursula Andress as the 2000-year-old femme fatale in "She"? Too hungry to connect to the youth market, Madonna goes on childishly using naughty words and flipping the finger (as onstage at Live 8 last summer). Marlene Dietrich, her supreme precursor, knew how to preserve her dignity and glamour".

Gotta love Camille. She is not known for pulling her punches.

I think Madonna is a messed up lady who tries to be a strict, wholesome, devoutly religious mom with her kids while trying to project a young, slutty image to the public.
I never was a Madonna fan, and never will be.

Uh, Madonna was never a glowing beauty. Far from it!

I don't like Madonna either. I do love the old movie "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and I think the reference to it by Camille Paglia is spot on.

what a wretched, hideous, old dried-up old shrew Camille has become. Madonna does not deserve that kind of bashing. And her new CD is fantastic. It just makes people crazy to see Madonna accomplish anything and sorry she hasn't had any plastic surgery yet... she looks 47 and that's what she is. 47. Piss off, Camille. You're the one who's overrated.

you have a right to your opinion, anonymous, and you have a right to your anonymous opinion. We all do.

As for me, I think the world would've been a better place without the image of the self-serving, slut-from-Hell Madonna. BTW she was a wretched excuse for a person when she was 17, too.

Thanks for commenting. I do like a good discussion.

BTW an old post of mine from September 21, 2005 references Baby Jane and famous mime, Marcel Marceau. Maybe now it will make a little more sense to all the young whippersnappers out there... or maybe not *sigh* ;-)

Agree. I did enjoy some of her earlier music, and many of her best songs have stood the test of time, which is almost surprise, but nothing she's done in about 15 years is worth squat.

No, indeed, she was never what you would call a pretty lady, but I did admire what she managed to do with the little she had at her disposal, both in looks and talent. Really, what a great business woman!

Her SEX book was base and entirely unnecessary. I do wonder how she'll justify such crass and obscene actions to her kiddies, one day when they grow up.

As for her new CD. Well, a 47 year old should never be seen romping around in a leotard, it's just not becoming, no matter how toned the body. A 47 year old woman, in leotard, providing us with overly vigorous pelivic thrusts (an odd little excuse for dancing?) - yeetch! Way too much information hon - put it away.

Yep, Caz nailed it. Madonna has always been tremendously talented at promoting herself, despite her many shortcomings. And she deserves much respect for that.

(You'll notice anonymous mentioned 47 twice in his comment. Coincidence? I think not!)

I have no problem with her being or looking 47, I just wish she'd grow up and act it.

It really seems there are two ways for women to age in the public eye, and Madonna seems to be choose "crass" over "class."

If there is one thing Madonna has succeeded at it's making me forget that she is 1,000 days from being 50.
I see her videos on TV, and I think, hmm, so sad, old lady trying to be young. But I never think, 47 47 47 47.
But, for better or worse, she remains a pungent cultural enigma, she's at once slutty and devout, strict and loose, mother and whore.
I don't know about her newest reincarnation, disco diva...I think it's this latest throwback infused image that has me remembering that she is less than a decade younger than my own mother.
Madonna is definitely skirting the "Borderline" (ha ha) between being able to pull this crap off any longer and just looking like a damn fool...perhaps already less skirting and more pushing our love over that self-same borderline.

If you've ever watched Bette Davis' over-the-top performance in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" you'd see the exact point Paglia is making in her article about a deluded has-been reliving the glory days.

Nothing says Madonna like the phrase "deluded has-been"
Nice leotard though. It makes me want to jazzercise...to bring back another 80s phenomenon.

Jazzercise...the Pilates of the '80's. Don't forget the silly legwarmers.

I wonder what her children will say and feel with all the negative PR ??? Older yes..We all age. A Modonna fan, I am not. I have been shocked by her behavior and racy tunes and stage acts. It makes me feel sad that she had to shock the world with her shows, book, and behavior...Let's shock the world with some clean talent for a change.
