Conjunction Junction

Spectacular Conjunction

Tonight, a slender 10% crescent Moon will leap up from the horizon to join the super-bright Venus and Jupiter.

Tomorrow, Dec. 1st, will be the best night of all. The now-15% crescent Moon moves in closer to form an isosceles triangle with Venus and Jupiter as opposing vertices. The three brightest objects in the night sky will be gathered so tightly together, you can hide them all behind your thumb held at arm's length.

So get out there people, and look up.

Who You Looking At?

My family is coming over for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow and I may be too busy to post, so I'll take the time to wish all my blog buddies and their families a Happy Thanksgiving Day.

And I'll leave you some words of thanksgiving from Ralph Waldo Emerson...

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.

Cheers from the Cube household.

Seven Poms A Firefighting

Seven Pomeranian dogs wear firefighter costumes during a fashion show of the Dog Olympics at the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium-amusement park complex in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo.

This photo made me laugh. I can just imagine my dog niece, Lulu, wearing one of these outfits.

Obama Trek

The guys at Political Machine have combined two of my favorite subjects -- politics and Star Trek -- into some essays.

Here's one:

Star Trek 2008: The Wrath of McKhain

I don't agree with their politics, but the Photoshop work is outstanding.

General Chang cracks me up.

Zodiac Revealed?

OPORD Analytical Founder Unmasks ' Zodiac' Killer

True crime buffs and fans of cryptography will enjoy the report; a long but fascinating read...

The Zodiac Killer

Conclusion: Gareth Penn is the Zodiac Killer.

UPDATE: From the Wikipedia entry:

Gareth S. Penn (1941- ) is an American author and amateur detective. Penn was among the first non-experts to focus effort on the famous Zodiac Killer case. He published a credible theory about the killer's motives, publicly accused a noted UC Berkeley public policy professor of the crimes, and labeled himself a one-time suspect.

Did he do it?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Copernicus ID'ed

The Kronenberg Foundation in Warsaw has created a computer-generated reconstruction of what astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus may have looked like on the basis of a skull discovered in the cathedral in Frombork, northern Poland.

Polish and Swedish researchers said Thursday they have identified the remains of Nicolaus Copernicus by comparing DNA from a skeleton they have found with that taken from hair retrieved from one of the 16th-century astronomer's books.

Woot!

This is cooler than cool.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps me enthralled with science.

Mind Reader Dog

This is my dog, Elke (yes, as in Elke Sommer) and she is a mind reader. I don't know how she does it, but she often manages to be right in the way of where I will be even before I know I will be there.

Amazing.

Take your mind off the stock market and share a silly pet trick...

Back Is The New Boo-Tay

Michelle Obama demonstrating the size of her butt?

No, that would be in bad taste, much as this article from Salon...

First Lady Got Back

I'm not a fan of MO, but the woman does have feelings.

It's hard to believe that this was 30 years ago!

Boldy Peeing

George Takei, Mr. Sulu from the original Star Trek series, shown here with an obvious Trek fan, has incurred the wrath of the producers of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! for inappropriate peeing.

Climate Chicanery

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Dr. James Hansen, Al Gore's BFF in global warming, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

Except it wasn't.

Trek Comics

Just in time for Christmas, a great gift idea for the Trekkie in your life...

TrekInk Review: Star Trek: The Complete Comic Book Collection DVD ROM

This collection is only missing the two issues done by Marvel that crossed the Star Trek crews with the X-Men of comic book fame.

Also missing is the smell of musty old paper and the tactile experience of turning the pages...

Oh well, it's still an awesome gift for collectors.

Tacky Headline

From the New York Times comes this article about President Bush hosting the Obamas at the White House:

A Visit Both Historic And Perhaps Awkward

Thing is, the title of the article was changed, yes changed from this:

"Obama Will Visit Bush, Watching Out for Tacks on Chairs in Oval Office"

I kid you not.

The Red And The Blue

Found this photo via:

Vermin Inc's Flickr Photostream

and I think it is illustrative of the election... too little red falling into a sea of blue.

I'm taking a philosophical stance on the matter. It is what it is and there's no changing it. I survived one Carter and two Clinton administrations. I will survive this one too.

One thing to keep in mind, Barack Hussein Obama, is that Americans are going to be watching your actions closely, so don't screw up.

After all, you wouldn't want those of us on the red side of the political spectrum to show you the same level of respect that those on the blue side showed to President Bush.

I'm just sayin...

Michael Crichton 1942-2008

'Jurassic Park' Author Michael Crichton Dies At 66

My favorite Crichton novel will always be "The Andromeda Strain", and, although I did enjoy many other novels of his, I am saddened to hear that there will be no future ones.

We have not only lost a wonderful novelist, but we have also lost an opponent in the craptastic man-made global warming lib-fest. He was a trained scientist who articulated his very un-politically-correct position and I will miss that very much.

RIP, Mr. Crichton.

Barry Bankrupt

From Newsbusters comes an interview that Obama gave on January 17, 2008...

Hidden Audio: Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry

If Obama is elected, I will not only blame the lazy malcontents who want free stuff from the government, but also the MSM because they did their utter best to hide the truth about BHO from the American public.

I hope and pray that there are more sane people than not.
