Elke pulled one of these stunts today. She refused to get into the car because she's associating it with going to the vet.
Well, if she hadn't been chewing at her wound
even while wearing her e-collar, her foot wouldn't have have needed yet another visit to the vet.
Sheesh! Lay off the foot, Elke.

Tell Elke that she is too pretty a girl to be making all those visits...people will talk!
Bitter Apple.
Or sedation...
angel: I didn't mean to stir up sad memories :-(
tmw: Elke hasn't been that bad. It's just that wound management takes patience & puppies aren't known for that.
brooke: Is bitter apple something nasty to put on the wound?
She was sedated for the surgery, but she let the doctor take out the stitches without it. Then she tore the scab off. So basically we take 2 steps forward & 1 step back.
Bitter apple is a repellant used to prevent chewing or licking and it's pretty much what the name suggests. However, you might want to check with the vet to see if it's okay to put it on an open wound. If not, you could try Rescue Remedy. It's an herbal tranquilizer in liquid form that can be put in your dog's food or water. Also, if the situation becomes too stressful, the advantage is that you can always take some yourself. You should be able to find it in pet stores, but it's also available from the Drs. Foster and Smith online catalogue.
rory: Thanks for the helpful info, epecially the herbal tranquilizer
part ;-)
Bitter Apple is a spray I get at the pet store that tastes horrendous, and I apply to electric cords, table legs, ect.
When one of my pups has a wound that I want them to leave alone, I spray it on my hand and work it into the fur all around the wound.
Great stuff! (I hear it comes in gel now, too!)
brooke: thanks. I think that might help.
