What Would The Sharks Say?

From GoComics :

"This Shark Week, while you're watching those sleek, grey "killing machines" slice through the water, keep in mind that there have only been 1,400 recorded shark attacks in the U.S. over the past 171 years. Your chances of being bitten by a shark are less than dying from a lightning strike.

Conversely, humans kill an average of 100 million sharks each year, much of it to feed the world's appetite for shark fin soup. So, who are the real killing machines?"

Humans have always been the killing machines. Always.

Have a fabulous day. ♥

...and more people are killed by cows than by sharks.

Sandee: Sharks kill to eat. Humans kill for so many other reasons, good and bad.

Jan: Yes, I hear that tipping cows over can backfire and they tip onto the tipper.

I remember well having to explain to 4th grade boys that using crows for target practice was a sin. If you hunt to eat that's one thing, but to kill for target practice is not.

I've spent a lot of time diving in my lifetime. Never been bothered by sharks. Usually, they check you out, realizing that you're not a fish, and move on. The exceptions for sharks would be if there's a lot of blood in the water. Then they go insane and bite everything including each other.

Adrienne: Good for you. When I started shooting at 11, it involved plinking cans out in the boonies. Later in life, I had to do some evil scientist stuff in labs to earn my bio degree and those things weigh on me even now, so shooting for me is limited to target practice. I could kill for food or defense, but that's about it.

LL: I agree with you that sharks prefer fish to humans. I was in chest deep water just fishing with live shrimp for bait and I started to notice some fish beginning to form a semi-circle around me. I realized they were baby sharks and when I counted to 24, I started to back off and didn't take my eyes off of them until I got to shallow water and they disappeared.

Still, a baby shark did bite my hand while I was trying to save its life. Go figure.

Sharks deserve better treatment than what we give them. All critters and the environment do, too.

Messymimi: I tend to agree that sharks have the same bad reputation in the water that Pitt bulls have on land. It can be very unfair.
