Ugliest Vegetable Contest

No, not another post about millionaire "documentary" filmmaker, Michael Moore... but an actual contest by the Britain's National Trust to search for the country's ugliest vegetable in Britain. Gardeners were encouraged to submit anything "from two legged carrots to corkscrew runner beans, which often taste great but are rejected because of their looks."

The Trust, which looks after many of Britain's historic gardens, said it hoped the campaign would counter a trend among retailers for stocking perfect-looking fruit and vegetables, regardless of its taste.

I don't happen to have an ugly vegetable at the moment, this hideously deformed freakish carrot thing isn't mine, but I do have an entry for the confused fruit category:

This is an orange who wanted to be an egg.

Poor thing, do you suppose it needs therapy?

I think it's too late for therapy, if you know what I *burp* mean.

I know what you mean about the veggies, sort of like the Island of Misfit Toys on Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. I always felt sorry for the toys nobody wanted.

By any chance, did you guys live near a nuclear power plant? Just kidding.

Eeeew! That carrot thing reminds me of the Elephant Man.

Your orange should consider having surgery to become an egg. It will be happier.

I added you to my blogroll, so I won't forget to stop by each day. Love your site!

I'm afraid the orange is beyond therapy, j.d., but thanks for your kind words.

My father taught me as I was growing up to look beyond the surface to whats inside! Whether it be a person, animal, or as in your example a "vegetable, LOL!"
I have had some very good friends, that JD there would have gone "Eeeew!" at. And it would have been her lose.
I will only mention a couple people in the limited space there is here.
Mrs Hand, her face almost unrecognizable from burns from a house fire. You see, she ran in again and again to save all of her children from their burning house. She was brave, dear and sweet! She taught me much!
I had a 5th grade teacher, Mrs Redeisil. She was covered in black hair even on her face and she was the best teacher I ever had, and I think of her with fondness, even today!
And I have had some very interesting pets that were rejected by others because of how they looked and in return they have given me so much love!

Next time you want to go "Eeeew!" because of how someone or something looks on the outside. Look deeper ... and you will find ... treasure ... beyond price!
I always have!

I have enjoyed your site for sometime now. I told my daughter and she also reads your Blog regularly!

Some of your posts put a giggle in my heart and brighten my day! Thank you!

Cube, I am sorry if my post was offensive in any way. Some times I talk to people like I do my children, my grand-children and my nieces and nephews! A bad habit!

sorry Cube if i hi-jak your comment thread here a minute.

To Faira;
mom, you always try so hard not to offend anyone, but frankly, i dont think what you said should have offended anyone. you taught us since i was small to respect a person for who they are and not what they look like. I always thought you were amazing for teaching us that because women as beautiful as you are on the outside, arent usually as beautiful inside. I hope no one ever looks at that commenter and says ewwww, jamie dawn! gasp! and i hope that one day she realizes how fortunate she is that parents like you taught us not to.

ok down off my soapbox. thanks Cube for letting me take up your comment space to say that.

Hey, not a problem. No apologies are in order. I don't take offense easily, & I certainly didn't find anything offensive in any of the comments on this post.

I welcome all comments, pro and con. I think people learn through intelligent discussion.

Blogging can change the world for the better, if only one person at a time, and one post at a time.

Comment away!

Hey, I did grow up near a nuclear power plant and my carrots always turned out perfect. (wink)

Faira is right, I have a friend that grew up across the street from me that is pretty messed up from an accident when she was about 10 years old, but she has a heart of gold.

Absolutely. The aphorism, "You can't judge a book by its cover" applies to people too.
