Not Just For Christmas

At our house, there were times when our mom would wear a belt over her neck and call it her jewelry.

The fear of the belt kept us kids in line all year long.

Corporal punishment... yes or no?

I was a perfect child, of course, so the question is moot. :-)

I never used a belt. Command presence kept them in line for the most part. The odd swat was simply to remind them that they were treading on dangerous ground.

A calm parent who lets a child know in advance that the discipline for a certain infraction will be the belt, and who metes it out with calm firmness is perfectly in line. The parent who is so angry that s/he is going to hit someone in a fury whether that someone deserves it or not is wrong on every count.

The problem with the psych people who tell you that spanking is evil is they only study the latter.

Jan: Yeah, right. I hope you know... I'm laughing out loud right now.

LL: I never used a belt on my girls either. I didn't need to. An occasional pop on the butt was enough, however, the threat of corporal punishment was always out there just in case they wanted to test the theory. My eldest daughter recently thanked me for being her mother and not her best friend. She's turned out better than some of her friends.

Some of these hellions need a good ass whooping. Just saying. Those are the ones that need corporal punishment.

Have a fabulous day. ☺

Messymimi: I never used a belt with my girls, but they weren't as bratty as I was growing up. I'm not defending my parents' use of the belt, but they were unable to deal with my antics without spanking. If you ask my mom, I was the brattiest of the lot and that's why I got the brunt of the spankings.

Sandee: I was no law breaking hellion, but I was a brat growing up. First child in the family, high IQ, precocious beyond my years... a recipe for mischief, for sure. I'm glad my parents were level-headed enough that I survived the spankings of my childhood.

Kids need punishment when necessary. Spare the rod, spoil the child. Though I got to the point that I'd beg my parents to beat me then let me outside. So for me it was curtailing my activities that had the greatest effect on me. In the end I'd say both strategies were needed.

Kid: Your comment made me think. We're all different, aren't we, but I can so understand your point of view on this. I got the belt a lot, but the very worst punishment I ever got was when my mom told me I was to wear dresses all the time, even at home, and not allowed to wear shorts underneath, which had always been my custom. I was a tomboy and this decree cut me to the quick because I felt like I couldn't move. So I'd get home and I'd sit on the couch and not move until dinner and then bed. To her credit, my mom rescinded the punishment after 2 days.

Under those circumstances, I'd rather get a spanking, too.
