The Tampa Tribune has refused to endorse either Bush or Kerry for President. To prove it, this Sunday's commentary section contained a full page screed on the reasoning behind this namby-pamby indecision entitled, "Why We Cannot Endorse President Bush for Re-Election". To keep things fair and unbiased, they devote approximately 2% of the article to the other side, namely "Why Kerry Concerns Us Too."
So there it is. The decision is...NO DECISION? This is the best they can do?
The editors explain their irresolute resolution by saying, "We have written today mostly about Bush because he was our choice the last time around and we believed his conservative principles were most closely aligned with ours."
Conservative principles? This is a ludicrous remark in light of the slow and inexorable slide into the land of its liberal sister paper, The St. Pete Times, ever since the hiring of Rosemary Goudreau as Editorial Page Editor. The liberal sea change has been evident for some time.
The only thing conservative about the Tribune is the way they mete out bold action: one timid baby-step at a time, because they wouldn't want to change too fast lest they scare away the loyal readership.
So there it is. The 'decision' really is that the Tribune is for a Kerry presidency, but they're too craven to come out and say it. I guess some might call that a highly nuanced position, I just call it gutless.
