just a few weeks ago an older fellow (WWII era by the look of him) stopped my husband in our local department store (the hubby was wearing an army tshirt and fatigues) and asked my husband if he was in the service. my hubby said that he had medicalled out with a service connected injury a few years ago and the old man took my husbands hand in his shook it and said thank you, you make us old veterans proud, thank you. then he walked away. i had tears in my eyes.

I've been there. I've seen soldiers and I couldn't bring myself to speak to them because I thought it would be awkward.
The most I have mustered in the past is to make eye contact with them, and male or female, give them a big smile.
From now on I will also give them the sign.
