(The lady could have been arrested here too for speaking to the policeman that way - a case of "offensive words and behaviour" However, we expect the police to use their discretion and not to be arresting members of the public for such trivial offences.)
miladysa: I think he over-reacted too. At a nearby McDonalds, they sometimes tell you to park in the Handicapped parking space. I've never had a police officer approach me about it, but I wouldn't want to be the test case.
brooke: She was parked where they told her to park to wait for her food. He repeatedly honked the horn at her to move (without her food). He demanded her license & registration and she said she had done nothing wrong and would produce neither one of the documents. She didn't say one curse word until after she was handcuffed and she heard him say into the radio that she had dementia and needed to be Baker Acted.
This isn't a totalitarian country. I don't think our cops should be wasting their resources arresting little old ladies who haven't broken any laws.
I say, cuff the officer, behind his back, fingerprint him, mug shot him and throw his butt in jail for the same amount of time she sat there. First because he was a rude shit honking at her, second for his big shot abuse of his police powers, third because he was thinking with his pistol and what he has hopefully tucked in his pants rather then his brain, if he has one. Finally, have him reimburse the lady for the amount that she lost due to her having her car impounded, a loss that clearly he caused and is responsible soley for!
Cube: You don't cuss cops, but the article in question was written by an obvious WAY liberal, which casts a lot of doubt on it for me.
I don't deny that there are some rude cops, but most of them deal with asshats every day. There's more to this than meets the eye; what does the supervisor say, for instance?
brooke: I think you're right that we don't have the whole story & only time will tell.
We were taught to respect police officers too, but it was understood that the police didn't push people around without provocation. We don't live in a police state and shouldn't have to live in fear of our cops.
I've read numerous accounts & I've heard Granny tell her story twice now. She is a pistol, for sure, but I think the cop was rude. I would hope they're taught to defuse situations with a little more finesse than this rookie showed.
"over reaction", cube? No, equal treatment. If those who are by choice and are supposed to "Protect and Serve", were treated the same as that which is met out by them to those they are supposed to be protecting and serving, we might see less abuse of the priviledged powers they excercize and less of a move toward a totalitarian police state.
By the way, was he displaying Protect or Serve with his actions? I am normally in the corner of the blue but this time I've got to side with the blue hair instead.
br: Maybe so, but I don't think this cop deserves to be jostled & arrested. I do think this cop deserves to be reeducated on how to treat the public. If he can't learn how to do it right, then he needs to get the boot.
annie: heh heh
frankfamily: Spot on! I especially liked the blue vs blue hair comment. That's exactly how I feel about it, only your comment was way more articulate.

Phew! Seems like he over reacted to me.

Man, what a croc. I'll bet that lady was a nasty old *ahem* from the get-go.
News flash: For someone who "raised her kids to be respectful", YOU DON"T CUSS AT COPS.
She's lucky that he didn't charger her with ASSAULTING an officer for cursing at him!

I would have a short fuse too if I were pushed around by a smart ass kid in his new uniform. I think he should be counseled into a new career path.

This smells bad to me.
br: I wouldn't go that far because that would be an over reaction in the other direction.
Besides, I think Granny's lawsuit will take care of the costs incurred.
jan: He is a rookie. Maybe he doesn't know the ropes yet.

I think the cop was way out of line. The elderly deserve respect too.

That's just crazy. That cop needs a McSmack.
Maybe his time would have been better used by going inside and bringing out the illegals working behind the counter. Just sayin'.

i would have politely responded to the officer, "sir, i'm waiting for them to bring out the braille menu. thank you for your concern."
nanc: With a reply like that, I can see why you're worried about getting sent to the gulag ;-)
