Iconic Liberty

Everyone has no doubt seen the image of the Statue of Liberty in the ads for the new horror movie Cloverfield

Well, Lady Liberty has been used an iconic image in science fiction for many years.

Blogger Gerry Canavan has a fascinating collection, including this one from a 1985 book cover that is "eerie-in-retrospect"...

I had no idea there were so many.

What? Are apocalyptic pictures featuring the Statue of Liberty not popular?

She is a beloved symbol. I know I was shocked the first time I saw Planet of the Apes. I was living in Manhattan at the time & I found the image of the statue half-buried in the sand very disturbing.

BTW does anyone else see something that looks like fire on the top of one of the World Towers?

That's the sun reflecting on the WTC, I think... But it DOES look like they're building a shield.

brooke: Sadly, a shield too late.

brooke: I just took a magnifying glass to the WTC, and I think there's smoke above the yellow flash.

I think you're right. I found this, but it doesn't really give any details about the cover pic.

brooke: I did some research too. Maybe we'll know soon.
