Beijing Takes Dog Off The Menu For Olympics

The ChiCom directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.

Whose bright idea was it to award China the Olymics, again?

Sheesh!

Are we POSITIVE that the Olympic committee and the UN are not made up of the same people?

I can't imagine ordering any meat from a menu in China and trusting that it is a kind of meat I would want to eat.

papa frank: They sound like one and the same to me... the liberal hive mind at work.

jan: I agree. I feel sorry for those poor athletes having to live on the crunchy granola bars they smuggled in for the duration of the Olympics.

The Olympics in China. Yeah, this is going to go well.

I don't see why it's OK to eat lambs and other cute stuff like that, but not dogs. Once you're killing something to eat it, does it really matter what it is? I mean, assuming it's not "people."

I don't understand why China gets the Olympics, either. They don't play nice with other kids, and they treat their own pretty poorly. It looks like that doesn't matter to anyone in power, though. Bah!

Meh, I agree with Jen. eat whatever you want, just treat them humanely before you kill them. thats my problem with china and what they eat. they generally do not treat livestock very well.

In a way I find this whole China Olympics thing kind of amusing. It's really highlighting the Asian obsession with "keeping up appearances". Gotta look good for events. it doesn't matter that people know they eat dog, they just don't want to parade the fact in front of us and give us conclusive proof. it doesn't matter if everybody knows what the pollution in China is like, for a global event they have to try to clean it up and make it look better than it is. Once everybody's gone tho, all bets are off and things go back to being as bad as ever. Chinese, Indians, Malays, whatever. We Asians can be so very hypocritical.

I'd say a good rule of thumb would be to not eat ANYTHING while in China.

Ick!

jen & rav'n: You both raise an excellent point. I guess we can be slaves to our cultural differences. Baby pigs are very cute and every bit as smart as dogs, yet we love pork. Treating the animals as humanely as possible is the most we can ask.

RE: the Beijing Olympics, I think Rav'n is spot on when she talks about "keeping up appearances". As soon as the tourists go home & the cameras are turned off, the ChiComs will go right back to spitting & defecating in the streets.

brooke: If I were one of the athletes, I'd pack a buttload of granola bars.

They should have awarded the Olympics to Taiwan. a separate nation from China that also has China in its official name ("Republic of China"). It would have been a good reward for a country that has played nice for a long long time and does not deserve the constant aggressive threats of "we will conquer you, destroy you, and annex you just because want want to plunder and pillage and rape your place and have bigger guns" that come from mainland China.

You know, I'll eat almost anything once. Or I thought I would. And if I were starving, maybe I'd eat an old dog that died of its own volition.

But in a restaurant? Couldn't do it.

Imagine back in '96 if we told everyone in Atlanta they can't eat pig because it offends people.

dmarks: Yeah, sort of like poor Hong Kong. I was dead set against the ChiCom Olympics from the very first. They should've been made to jump through a few more hoops to receive this kind of honor.

nanc: I'm not going. I may not even watch on TV.

bw: Yeah, necessity does have a way of changing a person's world view. I wouldn't eat dog unless I was starving... and that's what everyday life in communist countries, like China, is all about. Makes you appreciate the capitalist countries all the more.

edge: good point. Imagine a moslem olympics...

I have a feeling China will be cleaning up a lot of stuff to make their image a nice and shiny one for the world stage.
No dog stew for me!! Yucky!
