Dry Food Recall

The massive pet food recall just got bigger. Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled one of its brands of dry cat kibble.

Second Firm Recalls Pet food

This food is only available from a vet, but it scares me that officials are not even in agreement over the cause yet. The FDA says it found melamine, but could not confirm NY State Lab finding of aminopterin.

What is going on?

Does anybody have any good homemade cat and dog food recipies they'd like to share?

Whoa, hang on, isn't this like having your Cat Blog Friday revisited on a Saturday?

My Mum used to cook up some chicken and rice for her dog, as a treat, or when he had an upset tummy. He loved it. Don't know if cats would go for it though, but worth a shot, with some tuna, for example, rather than chicken, perhaps?

Cook up hamburger with garlic and rice, do the same with chicken. Don't use onion. For cats, use more meat, they are carnivores.
If you look up on the internet, there are recipes.
Caz-Human tuna may not be appropriate for cats! So be careful, chicken, ground beef, fresh or frozen fish may be better choices.

caz: As far as I'm concerned, it's always a good day to post about cats :-)

Cats loooove chicken. At least my cats do.

tmw: I think I'll do an internet search. I would hate to poison my animals.

BTW do onions cause stomach upset in cats? Is that why you leave them out?

It's time to buy extra steaks and hamburger and chicken for the pets.
Better safe than sorry, until this mess is worked out.
Of course, who knows how safe OUR food will be these days??

Cube-The onions have a substance that can sicken dogs and cats, don't use for either! And it isn't the stomach, it's systemic. Garlic doesn't have the same problem.
Jamie-I know!

j.d.: You are so right. Our food supply is coming from who-knows-where too.

tmw: You are a veritable fount of information. Thanks for sharing it with me :-)

this just gets worse and worse! why are we buying wheat gluten from CHINA FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

tuna is still very reasonable - i'd drain it and add rice to it, as tmw said - no onions - they are toxic to pets, but they seem to know it and will pick through if there are any in leftovers. i'd let the rice soak up in the tuna for a day or two before serving.

our cats have always eaten dry food and leftovers - we trim most fat off meat, boil it and dole it out to our cats and dogs.

p.s. - and if you tell anybody, i hunt you down and feed you to them!

old kathy is going to have a field day with this, i just know it...

Yikes! I hope they resolve the problem soon and get ALL the bad food off of the shelves.
Thanks for keeping us posted.

Rice and scrambled eggs, with a little gravy mixed in. It looks foul, but mine love it in a pinch, like when I've forgotten to buy the kibble...

Just an FYI, took my cat to the vet yesterday and the vet said tuna was not good for cats...what? That's what he said.

cube said...

nanc: No! Not that!

cube said...

voracious: Thanks.

aims: I just heard that recently. It was a surprise for me too, but luckily, tuna is too pricey to feed to cats.
