Pink Slime

Soylent green is people... so what is pink slime?

If you're not familiar with pink slime, also known as lean beef trimmings, go HERE to read the "gristly" details.

The good news is that starting in the fall, schools will be 'allowed' to forsake pink slime in the cafeteria food of American children. Thanks to good ole public pressure.

In case you're wondering, here's a taste test from a real Foodie who volunteered to eat a pink slime burger:

'Pink Slime' Sounds Gross, But How Does It Taste?

Chances are we've all eaten it, but until the public refuses to be fed substances such as pink slime, it might be a good idea to grind your own ground beef or stay away from it altogther.

From the second link in the post:

There was a time when ground beef was similarly labeled and you knew at least roughly what part of the animal you were getting. And though some packages still indicate "ground chuck" or "ground sirloin," today most is labeled simply as "ground beef."

I was wondering why I haven't been seeing those specific labels.

I always eat well done burgers, so I've never noticed anything approaching pink slime. However, I have recently noticed that burgers don't ooze juices the way they used to. As the article mentioned:

...First, the unadulterated burger....The meat was juicy, tender and nicely seared. Where I'd cut, juices slowly dribbled out onto the plate, collecting in a pool....

The pink slime burger also was perfectly seared and drew me in with an equally alluring aroma. But no juices collected on the plate. Or dribbled out....

Interesting post, Cube. I do love hamburgers!

We eat ground beef so rarely, I actually think I would pay more for the 'slimeless' organic meat!

I really don't think I could stomach an ammonia burger.

Eeewww! It reminds me of whipped marshmallow frosting that they make pink elephants out of for cakes.

I'd much rather eat a pink elephant cake than a burger with that goo. Not because I'm squeemish, because I am not. I've actually ground meat scraps and made ground beef when I worked in a market.

But I am highly suspicious of things that they tamper with to make edible. What do they know about how easily or not our bodies can metabolize that? Creepy.

I wonder what Ms. Fitness/Nutrition MO thinks of this gloop going into the school lunches?

That looks disgusting. That may be on par with the "creative" way they put various foods together at the cafeteria where I attended college and worked a couple semesters.

what it actuallY IS isn't as bad as what it's mixed with!! yikes.
I agree...grind your own, folks; or have the store grind it for you..even large grocery stores should do that.
From the looks of it, they should call that junk COTTON CANDY BURGERS!...

That's not even an actual picture of lean finely textured beef, and this is one of the most uneducated blog posts that I have ever read....get your facts straight!

Oh no, processed meat going into ground beef... Sure it's washed and processed but we all eat food that is anyway. I think people are making far too big of a deal out of this and causing unnecessary fear and panic. That's not even an actual picture anyway.

I don't care what it looks like before it goes into my meat I just know what it looked like after I cooked it and there was no way I was feeding it to my husband or two children! We will go all organic meat or ground turkey from now on. I Am not a health nut but I don't want meat washed with ammonia to kill the germs!
