The RI-MAN robot carries a life-sized doll at the Riken laboratory in Nagoya, central Japan. The RI-MAN is a seeing, hearing and smelling robot that can carry human beings and is aimed at helping care for the country's growing number of elderly.

Do those come for plus sized people? That was looks a little flimsy...
That is actually really neat. I wonder if they could use them for mining and to carry folks out of fires, ie in places where it's good to have human skills but dangerous?
And then, once we start using them to do all of our scut work, how long until they become sentient and we have to abandon their use? Or worse, until they revolt? Doesn't this seem like a cheesy sci fi movie flashback waiting to happen?
Exactly what I mean by robot insurance. When robots rampage, it is the old people they'll go after first...you know crush their pill bottles with their metallic claws, knock them down when they're playing shuffleboard ;-)
Smelling? SMELLING?
Okay now, that's just freaky.
I'm thinking that smelling feature is to detect when the elderly have made poopie in their depends.
I'd be afraid of a robot malfunction that might make them drop a fragile person.
I'm thinking this isn't anywhere near as wacky as it seems. Apart from the cleverness of the technology, Japan has a soaring rate of elderly (they just won't die young, damn it, unlike us Westeners), and with no social security system the abandonment of the aged is increasing. Although, I guess a homeless 90 year old could have trouble finding the dollars for a robot to care of them.
At least a robot won't bash, abuse,starve, neglect and steal - unlike family members, who in our society are increasingly showing what nasty, vile, greedy excuses for humans they really are by treating elderly parents and relatives like less than garbage. It's quite shameful. I say bring on the robots and shoot the abusive relatives.
I think they need to work the bugs out of it. Right now, the robot looks like it can only carry people stuffed with cotton balls.
