Knee Effusion

Knee effusion or swelling of the knee (colloquially known as water on the knee) occurs when excess synovial fluid accumulates in or around the knee joint.

It started with squats and lunges last week. I wrapped it, took some naproxen, and it improved dramatically. That is, until yesterday, when I turned abruptly and it popped up again.

I'll be fine.

Years ago, my Vertebrate Zoology professor was lecturing at the board and he turned to face our class when he gave out a loud, garbled yell. He warned us about how easily you can get hurt when you get old.

My thinking is, getting old sucks, but it beats the alternative.

Sometime exercise lays you up for a bit. I hope this clears up soon. Yikes.

Have a pain free day. ☺

Thank you. I think I need to take up something less strenuous, like yoga. I'm very flexible, but I tend to overdo it.

I'm thinking about getting a TommyCopper knee brace... do you have any experience with those?

Rest the knee. Are you taking any medication for it. I just found out that the pain in my right foot is arthritis ( getting old I guess ) and bone spurs. It won't stop me from golfing. Have a wonderful evening Cube. See ya.

Paul Pietrangelo: My knee pain has unfortunately coincided with a visit from my in-laws so I'm not resting it as much as I should. I do wrap it and I take naproxen. The meds and the support from the ace bandage is key to getting around 'cause I can't stop and rest it.

I'm glad your pain won't stop you from golfing; my pain isn't going to stop me either. Stay active and stay young. I know I'm trying.

Can't you use your knee as an excuse not to play the gracious hostess and to let everyone wait on you. i would, but then I'm rather evil.

DMSO worked for me.

Cube - Sorry you are having trouble with your knee. You are right that growing old sucks - but it does beat the alternative. Anyway - just think how wise you are when you get older. :]

Jan: :P

Don't give me that. If I used my powers for evil, the whole world would be in peril ;)

Always On Watch: I'm curious. I thought DMSO was illegal or restricted in some way.

Sue Hanes: I wasn't wise enough to stretch before I exercised way too much... a dumb move two times over.

My cousin died at 35 leaving behind two young boys. I always think of her when I feel the aches and pains of getting older.

I got one of those tommyknocker things today. I hope it works.

Cube,
I got DMSO from an equestrian catalog.

DMSO isn't authorized for human use, but I used it in small amounts to get some relief.

Here is some additional information about DMSO (including information about an alternative).

Always On Watch: I remember an ancient bottle of Heat that I think had DMSO in it... it did smell awful, but it worked.

Thanks for the reference material you provided.

I once threw my back out while brushing my teeth (no pun intended)... Getting older. At least my brain gets exercise every day, though some would insist I have already thrown that out long ago also.

DaBlade: What? You dropped your dentures and busted your back when you bent over to pick them up... you know, five second rule ;)

I'm teasing. I know the most innocent of movements can cause a catastrophic cascade of pain. We oldies have to watch out for any abrupt movement, much less super burpees, which is what messed up my knee.
