Anthony Bourdain 1956 - 2018

Anthony Bourdain Hangs Self In Hotel

I thought this man had the best life ever. I guess I just don't know people.

Reminds me of the poem "Richard Corey." We never know another's heart.

Britt Hume said the other night , and I just put it on FB, "EVERYBODY IS FIGHTING A BATTLE WE DON"T KNOW ABOUT. BE KIND." This guy seemed so happy, so carefree, the world was his oyster...actually, that's a pretty good title for a book he might have written, considering he was such a foodie and traveled so much! Suicide is up....my heart breaks for this guy. I probably didn't agree with him on anything political or personal (he was a huge druggie and drinker, self-admitted) but I admit I've shed a tear for him. Maybe for the sadness that prompted him to do something so awful. I just watched a CNN interview with him, only 2 weeks ago he was on their set....smiling, laughing, terrific. And now he's gone. And he had a daughter ..only 11 yrs old.

Hubby loved him so very much. So sad.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, my friend. ♥

I had not heard of his death until you broke the story here on the BLOG. As with you, I thought that he had it made - first class travel, the best food, a young daughter who loved him, and so forth. As was pointed out above, he had serious substance abuse problems and that can create an emotional roller coaster that is hard to step off. He stepped off and stopped the ride. Maybe those who promote alcohol as the cornerstone of a lifestyle will take a moment to reflect -- nah, they won't.

This broke my heart. I was quick to anger because he did this to his daughter but friends have reminded me that mental illness is a great struggle and often ends in suicide. I felt so personally connected to this person I never met. He must have suffered terrible pain.

Jan: That's a beautiful sentiment. Reminds me of one of my favorite writers, David Foster Wallace. He hung himself on purpose. David Carradine, of "Kung Fu" fame hung himself by accident due to auto erotic asphyxiation. Forensics will tell how Bourdain ended his life.

Z: That's a good sentiment, too. Being kind is a good thing to be. Walk a mile in a man's shoes. I had no idea Bourdain was that sad inside. He sure hid it well.

Sandee: My husband couldn't stand the guy. My eldest daughter and I are both foodies and, although we never saw him cook a single dish, we were fond of his brash personality.

It's always sad when someone choses to end their pain this way instead of reaching out. The funeral will be packed, i'm sure, with people who would have dropped everything and been there for him had he just let them know. That's every funeral after a suicide that i've ever been to, by the way.

I guess I'm out of the culture loop. I've never heard of any of these people offing themselves. Whether its mental illness or drug abuse, its always sad for their families who have to endure.

LL: Addiction of any kind is an evil master. Bourdain had some demons in his head and they eventually overtook his life.

Messymimi: You're right, but the suicidal don't always see their situation clearly. Addiction and mental illness can cloud the situation and it can become a lethal combination.

DaBlade: Yes, the ones who are left behind have a hard road ahead of them.
