Chicken?

An elderly woman offers a chicken to a potential buyer on a street in Kiev amidst fears of the spread of a virulent strain of avian flu from the Crimean peninsula to other parts of the country.

The spread of avian flu is serious, but I think I'd be more worried about plain old germs being spread from people handling chickens in the street.

Don't go looking for zebras until you run out of ponies.

Yeah, chickens were full of yucky stuff like salmonella even before the bird flu. It's even better if you don't refrigerate it, although it looks mighty cold enough in that picture...

Good point. It's probably colder on the streets of Kiev than our fridges & maybe even our freezers.

I still wouldn't buy a chicken from that old woman. Who knows where that chicken has been.

I would say that anytime someone hands you a chicken from their coat pockets, it's probably not a good idea to buy and eat it.

Much like going to Mexico. Never ever eat a burrito coming from a vendor with caked in dirt under his fingernails.

Trust me on that one amigos.

If you're starving and need to eat some meat, then go ahead and buy the chicken. Be sure to cook the heck out of it, though.
I'd be more worried about the possibility that the lady was a flu carrier herself and might sneeze on me.

After reading all of your comments, I can only say, I'm soooo glad to be living in the USA where we can buy our chickens from Publix & not some old woman in the street. Just one more thing to be thankful for!

Lady and chicken would scare me. The street is not my favorite meat shopping location.

I'm in total agreement. Buying street meat is not a good idea.

Mmm... Publix chicken!

Oops! Sorry... Didn't mean to drool all over your blog.

But don't forget, if the bird flu mutates in a manner that permits bird to person, and then mutates again to permit person to person transmission, do not even think about eating poultry or pig meat - no matter how well you cook it.

I don't know for sure, but I believe that cooking the heck out of a bird will kill just about every germ known to humanity.
